BU/BOA 2009 Joint Rally Information
By: Marge Kletter BU 2352/BOA 53
Have you started to plan your trip to Urbanna, Virginia yet? Although it’s not until September 22‐25,
2009, don’t put it off too long!
There are many places to stop and “smell the roses,” visit, sightsee and enjoy along the way. Since Urbanna
isn’t exactly on a major highway, a few side‐trips will be necessary, but some are sure to be pleasurable
and interesting.
Traveling across Virginia from west to east provides an opportunity to stop in Charlottesville and visit
Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. See Jefferson’s many inventions and innovations in his home as well as a
lovely garden and orchard. Michie Tavern (1784) and President James Monroe’s Ashlawn plantation are also
in the area. A stop in Richmond offers the Museum of the Confederacy–a must for Civil War buffs, and the
Virginia State Capitol is another interesting stop. Are you a motorhome traveler who likes to visit as many
state capitols as possible?
Progressing eastward is Williamsburg, a gem of Virginia … in fact, the entire United States! A few days are
really necessary to see the highlights of Jamestown and Yorktown as well as Williamsburg. If you’re not too
tired after seeing Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area, Historic Jamestowne or Yorktown Battlefield – there’s
always Busch Gardens or the Pottery Factory (with shops galore) nearby in Lightfoot. Next stop; Bethpage
Campground.
If you are coming to Urbanna from the north, September is a great time of year to visit Washington, D.C.,
(cooler and summer vacation time is over). Seeing the sights in our Nation’s capital depends on time available
and your personal priorities. Outside the capital region are other Virginia side‐trips of interest. Old
Town Alexandria is a charming, historic town and worth a visit. Mount Vernon is very nearby, too.
The National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar‐Hazy Center in Chantilly, near Dulles Airport, is a
fascinating facility. Hundreds of famous aircraft and spacecraft are displayed, including the “Enola Gay.” An
IMAX theater and simulators are there, too.
There are so many more beautiful, scenic and exciting places to see in Virginia. How ‘bout Skyline Drive,
the Chesapeake Bay Bridge‐Tunnel, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Blue Ridge Parkway, just to name a few.
There are lots of varied local events in the September time frame. The Alexandria Festival of the Arts, Northern
Neck Food and Harvest Fest at Stratford, etc., will set their dates for 2009 after the first of the year. We
hope to provide you that information at a later date. As you plan for the 2009 Joint Rally, Bounders
“Crabbing Together,” don’t forget the message on the Virginia Travel Guide, “Live passionately. Virginia is
for Lovers.”
